Boom!Sonamy - A Late Night Meeting

Amy leaned on the balcony railing, staring out into the night sky in contemplation. She had tried to sleep, but after a while of tossing and turning she had given up, draped a shawl around her shoulders, and decided to take a walk outside and up to her little getaway place. Today had been one crazy day, and it had all started with Tails' new invention, UT. To think, one little robot had gotten them to fight each other so easily, and what was worse, almost ended up revealing some sensitive information of hers. A few seconds more and the truth would have been out, not just for Sonic to hear, but everyone. It was a thought Amy couldn't bear to think about and in haste she switched her mind to what else had happened that day. Her expression changed to one of bliss and she felt her face heat up slightly as she thought about how Sonic had saved her and protected her throughout their battle with Eggman. She fondly remembered his arms holding her, their eyes meeting, and then the sweet and awkward smile he had given her after UT's translation before dashing away. Amy sighed, too far lost in thought about everything to hear footsteps approaching and see a blue figure standing below, looking confused.

“Didn't expect you to be out here this late.” Amy, surprised by the sudden voice, jumped a bit and looked down at the hedgehog in disbelief.

“S-Sonic, what are you doing up..?” she stuttered, unsure what to tell him if he asked her back.

“Tails woke me up with his snoring so I decided to take a late-night run. It's funny, I don't think I've ever heard him snore before. Well hey, since we're both up, mind if I join you...?”

“I, oh um, no I don't mind,” Amy answered just barely before feeling a whip of wind as he ascended the stairs and appeared next to her on the balcony. She smiled at him and pulled the shawl a little tighter around her shoulders.

“So, did something wake you up or is this a usual thing you do..?” Sonic asked, his back leaning against the railing with his hands on either side. Amy was silent, not wanting to say why she was really up, but not sure what else to substitute for it. Knowing he was waiting, she quickly made one up.

“I woke up hungry all of a sudden, so I had a quick snack, but then I realized I wouldn't be able to go back to bed just then and decided I would gaze at the stars for a little while to clear my mind.”

Amy remained calm and casual, but in her mind she scowled at herself for adding on the last bit.

“Yeah, guess it is a pretty nice night for star gazing...” Sonic answered, turning around and staring up into the sky a few moments before continuing. “...it's definitely a nice change after all that happened today. Pretty crazy what one robot can cause, huh?” Sonic closed his eyes and yawned, a tired smile forming on his face afterwards as he looked back to her. Amy smiled back and tried to avoid thinking about how cute he looked. “Hehe yeah, crazy...” she replied distractedly, causing him to look at her a bit questioningly.

“Hey, you alright..? You seem a little...distracted by something.” he asked. Amy, smiling in embarrassment, put her hands up, shaking her head as she replied. “Oh no, n-not really. It's probably just the exhaustion getting to me. I should probably get going.” Turning away quickly she headed for the stairs, but the quick movement combined with her tiredness caused her to stumble and lose balance. A second later though and she found herself staring up at Sonic's face, much like what had happened earlier that day.

“Woah, that could have ended badly,” Sonic said, helping her to her feet again away from the stairs. He had a hand on her shoulder and a small, amused smile on his face. “You know, you don't look that exhausted. What was with the hurry?”

“I-well, what does it matter to you..?” Amy shot back, surprised with her rather sour response.

“Nothing, jeez. Just wondering.” Sonic answered, putting his hands up in defense before letting them rest at his side. “You would have rolled down the stairs because of it if I hadn't stepped in.”

“I just lost my balance at first. I would have been fine after a moment.”

“Oh, so you're saying you'd rather I didn't do anything? Does that apply as well to earlier today when I saved you then..?” Sonic replied, crossing his arms. He hadn’t meant for that last bit to slip out, but it was too late now.  

“No, of course not! That was different. Here I could've probably saved myself from falling without you having to step in.” Amy replied defiantly, crossing her arms as well.

“I'd think you'd be happy no matter when I'd save you.”

“Well, I am, it's just you shouldn't have to feel like you need to save me all the time. I'm capable enough on my own and shouldn't get used to relying on you to always be there when I'm in trouble.” Amy, still with her arms crossed, had her gaze directed away as she said this. The words came out a bit more forceful than she thought they would, surprising her a bit. Sonic furled his brow in confusion and cocked his head to the side, partly trying to get her to look at him again.

“Amy, that's crazy. We're supposed to be there for each other; it's what teammates do.”

“I know, but there should be a balance. I save you, you save me, you know? If you have to save me all the time I'll just end up being a burden.” Amy reasoned, turning her eyes back to his before looking off at the sky aimlessly. Sonic shook his head with an amused smile.

“I'm sure there will be times when I need saving, well maybe not many, but you know.” Sonic paused, knowing immediately that wasn't what he should have said. He sighed and continued, placing a hand on her arm, which got her attention again. “Look, it doesn't matter to me how many times I have to save you. One of the things I care about is your safety, so don't ever feel like you're a burden to me, alright..?” Sonic looked back at her with a smile, not quite realizing until a second or two after the weight of his words. His eyes went wide a second before he let his hand slip off her arm and looked away awkwardly, all the while trying to ignore the heat rising in his face. At least it was dark so Amy wouldn't be able to see it. Amy was staring back in surprise, her own face beginning to heat up at his words while a touched smile spread across her lips.

“You're cute when you care,” she said softly, the words blurting out unexpectedly. She placed a hand over her mouth as her eyes widened and Sonic stood there, unsure how to respond to her comment. Both turned away from each other slightly, Sonic trying to find words but failing and Amy silently yelling at herself for letting something like that slip out. A long awkward silence fell between them before Amy spoke again. “Sooo, I guess maybe we should call it a night...?” There was a pause but then Sonic nodded in reply. They stepped down the stairs, walking a short distance to Amy's back door before saying their goodbyes for the night.

“Well, guess this is goodnight,” Sonic spoke, the awkward feeling still not gone completely. He could tell Amy was feeling the same as well.

“Yeah...guess so,” she replied, twiddling her thumbs a bit as she continued. “Hey Sonic, I think it's better we keep tonight a secret between us. Wouldn't want the others getting any ideas.” Sonic nodded again in agreement, smiling and scratching his head after a moment.

“Hey, if you're ever up late again sometime, maybe we could do something like this again...? That is, if you'd want to.” Amy, a bit surprised, smiled and nodded, secretly overjoyed he would suggest another meeting. “Yeah, I'd like that.”

Amy held back saying anything more as he smiled awkwardly at her before running off in a gust of wind. She watched him go and then retreated into her house a moment later, a smile spread across her face as she laid down and drifted off to sleep.
